With its release date set just over a month from today, The Social Network has finally gone viral (pun intended) as the official site for the Facebook movie is now up and active.
Columbia Pictures has released several new images on the site from the film, which has already begun to attract controversy for its portrayal of Facebook founders Mark Zuckerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg) and Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) and the effect that the site’s success had on the respective young men.
Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) wrote the screenplay for The Social Network, based off author Ben Mezrich’s best-selling novel, The Accidental Billionaires. David Fincher directed the film, which early word of mouth indicates will be a definite contender during the upcoming Awards season.
Both the teaser and official trailer for The Social Network portrayed the film as a cautionary tale that addresses such timeless themes as power and corruption in the context of the modern digital age. Fincher generally has an excellent eye for stylishly dark cinematography in his directorial efforts, and his latest looks like it will be no exception – who would have expected that in a movie about Facebook?
The photo gallery assembled below contains images of four important players in The Social Network – they are (in order) Eisenberg as Zuckerberg; Garfield (the new Peter Parker) as Saverin; Rooney Mara (the new Lisbeth Salander) as Erica Albright, Zuckerberg’s ex-girlfriend; and Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker, the first president of Facebook.

Will the success (or failure) of The Social Network lead to (or discourage) other website-based movies from being made in the future? That remains to be seen for now, though the Lolcats movie might take awhile to make the transition to the big screen.
The Social Network arrives in regular theaters in the U.S. on October 1st, 2010.
